We waited for Padayappa to emerge from the shola. On the opposite hill, villagers gathering twigs stood watchful too! Then he appeared. The moment he began walking toward their hill, the entire space fell empty for him!! He reached the very spot where the bundles of sticks were kept, gently moved them aside with his trunk, made his own way… and faced a near-vertical climb!! With his trunk, he seemed to measure the mountain itself!! Placing each step with impossible calm as he rose uphill. And somewhere in that moment, I completely disappeared into his presence.
