The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and police busted an illegal biomedical waste recycling racket in Patiala. Hazardous waste from hospitals and blood banks, including blood-stained syringes and vials, was being diverted to scrap dealers instead of being destroyed. This high-grade plastic waste was reportedly used to manufacture children's toys and medical equipment. Raids on warehouses on Devigarh Road revealed waste with government barcodes from a Mohali-based treatment plant. Authorities have sealed the premises and are investigating the involvement of authorized waste management agencies.
