A 26-year-old youth named Hemanta Naik was brutally murdered in Mayabahala village, Sundargarh, when he tried to intervene in a dispute between his neighbor, Kandarp Dehury, and Dehury's wife. After an initial altercation, the accused attacked Hemanta with a sharp weapon later that night while he was sitting alone. Hemanta died on the spot. Ironically, his sister's wedding was scheduled for July 6.
