The circulation of fake 500-rupee notes in India has increased by 20% according to recent financial reports. While the volume of 500-rupee notes in the market has grown to represent 41.2% of total currency, banking fraud cases have seen a 46.6% rise in terms of value, totaling ₹48,021 crore in 2025-26. Interestingly, 98.45% of withdrawn 2000-rupee notes have returned to the system. Public sector banks reported higher fraud amounts compared to private banks. Additionally, currency printing costs have decreased due to lower production orders.
