The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a nationwide warning against the use of newspapers for wrapping and serving food. Following an incident in Mumbai, the regulator highlighted that printing ink contains harmful chemicals, pigments, and heavy metals like lead that can leach into food, causing severe health issues including food poisoning. FSSAI reiterated that Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2018 prohibit this practice and directed all vendors, including street stalls and restaurants, to use only food-grade packaging materials to ensure public safety.
