The Assam government has decided to stop issuing new Aadhaar cards to individuals above 18 years of age to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining them. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that in exceptional cases, the District Commissioner will send proposals to the state government, which will then decide on eligibility. This step comes as Aadhaar enrollment in some districts has exceeded 100% of the population, raising concerns about illegal Bangladeshis acquiring the documents.
