🌾 Saint of the Day — Wednesday, May 6, 2026 Saint François de Laval Shepherd Who Refused to Look Away ✨ His Story François de Laval was born in 1623 into a noble family in France, yet he chose a path far from comfort and privilege. Drawn by a deep love for Christ and His people, he became a missionary and was appointed the first bishop of New France (present-day Canada) in 1658. His diocese was vast and challenging, stretching across rugged lands and harsh climates. But Laval did not remain distant from his people. He travelled by canoe and on snowshoes, visiting remote communities, caring for the sick, baptizing children, and guiding both settlers and indigenous peoples with a shepherd’s heart. He stood firmly against injustice, especially when indigenous communities were exploited. Refusing to remain silent, he defended their dignity and worked tirelessly to build a Church rooted in truth and compassion. He established parishes, founded schools, and created the seminary that would later become Université Laval. ✨ A Life Transformed Laval lived what he preached. His charity was not theoretical—it was practical and sacrificial. He often gave his own bed to the poor and chose simplicity over comfort. Even after resigning as bishop, he continued to serve quietly as a priest, never stepping away from love. ✨ Why He Became a Saint Saint François de Laval was canonized in 2014 because of his heroic pastoral charity. He did not look away from suffering. He chose to see, to respond, and to give himself fully for the good of others. His life reflects the heart of Christ, the Good Shepherd. ✨ What He Teaches Us Laval teaches that indifference is the enemy of love. True faith moves us toward people, especially those who are overlooked or forgotten.
