Illegal sand mining is rampant in Karlamunda block of Kalahandi district, specifically from the Tel and Utei rivers. Despite complaints, the mining department has failed to take strict action against the sand mafia who transport sand day and night using tractors and hyvas without valid permits. This has resulted in a significant loss of government revenue and local residents are facing disturbances.
