15th of Muharram – The Captives of Karbala in Kufa According to many traditions, after the tragedy of Karbala, the surviving members of the family of Imam Husayn (A.S.), including Lady Zainab (A.S.) and Imam Ali ibn Husayn (Imam Zayn al-Abidin) (A.S.), were taken as captives to Kufa. When they arrived, they were brought before Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, the governor of Kufa. Believing that he had achieved victory, Ibn Ziyad held a gathering and ordered that the blessed head of Imam Husayn (A.S.) be brought before him. When the blessed head was presented, Ibn Ziyad spoke arrogantly and claimed that Allah had disgraced Imam Husayn (A.S.) and his family. Lady Zainab (A.S.) courageously rejected his claim. She declared that true disgrace belongs to the sinful and the wicked, not to the family of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). She praised Allah for honoring Ahl al-Bayt, keeping them steadfast, and preserving their dignity despite their suffering.
