When Products Meet Purpose

When Products Meet Purpose
This is a walk down memory lane. This writing is about six stories which taught me what product impact really looks like. Over six years of UX research, working alongside cross teams, we've measured countless metrics and analyzed endless data points. But these stories? These are the ones that made me understand why we do what we do.
The First "Wow" Moment (Or: When an Intern Meets a Master)
Picture this: It’s August 2019, nervous intern me, diving into my very first usability test, clutching my script like a life preserver. Enter Vikram, my first participant. Five minutes in, barely a minute after showing him the design, he says: "So, why is there no like option for this audio comment like we do for text?"
It wasn't an intentional miss - it was something we completely overlooked.
This was my first lesson in user wisdom. People who've been part of an ecosystem for long can immediately spot anomalies that we, the builders, miss entirely. Vikram taught me that users don't just use our products - they become native speakers of our design language.
Golgappa and Music (Or: The Unlikely Love Story)
As I progressed in my internship, I found myself talking to people about content they loved and shared. Then I met Muskan, who passionately described her love for golgappa - that famous street food. But here's the twist: what made those videos special wasn't just the food, but the music accompanying it.
According to her, the music made the golgappa more delectable, amplified her love, and pacified her cravings when she couldn't eat it. She'd then share these videos with friends, creating a whole community around this musical-culinary experience.
Who knew street food and soundtracks could create such deep emotional connections?
Community and Creativity (Or: How Old Bollywood Found New Life)
Working on my first major project building communities on ShareChat, I encountered Jeet. He'd revived his love for old Bollywood classics by posting in his group, finding like-minded people who showed appreciation through comments and requests. Their engagement became his source of ideas for new posts and motivated him to learn new tools to experiment with his hobby.
A space to create, to be seen creating, and to get love from others - that's what reinforced his creative phase.
Lockdown Adda (Or: When Virtual Became Vital)
Then came 2020. ShareChat ChatRooms launched right during the pandemic, becoming a safe haven for people stranded away from families. They'd connect online, talk about circumstances, understand each other's pain, boredom, and uncertainties.
But here's what amazed me: they rose against the gloom and made ChatRooms a space for entertainment and storytelling. Even our team, adjusting to remote work, found ourselves visiting these rooms at night.
One room called "Lockdown Ka Maza" would be packed with listeners as host Rahul set the tone for storytelling. Some days we'd laugh out loud, other days there'd be silent understanding when people shared personal struggles and how they overcame them.
In the darkest times, people created light for each other.
Dreams Made Real (Or: When Platforms Become Possibilities)
Building livestreams taught me about impact beyond numbers - impact in people's lives. We were creating platforms to boost digital and creative confidence, help people find communities, and monetize their talents.
Jayanti and Poonam, with their consistency, built audiences around their topics. With her earnings, Jayanti could buy makeup articles she used to create content as a makeup artist. Poonam opened a salon, crediting Moj for making it happen.
As Jayanti told me: "I got a platform where I could see engagement on my content and earn money to find resources to make more content in the makeup and lifestyle genre."
We weren't just building features - we were building livelihoods.
Staying Relevant (Or: The 6 AM Digital Ritual)
In a recent interview, I learned about Renu ji, a 45-year-old homemaker. After stopping her alarm at 6 AM, the very first thing she does is open ShareChat to find good content to share with friends and family.
In her words, it's not just wishing them a great day - it's a conscious effort to belong in the digital space. "All my friends post content early in the morning, and I want to do the same."
For her, this daily ritual was proof that she wasn't being left behind in the digital ecosystem that influences our physical world.
The Real Lesson (Or: Why We Build What We Build)
These six people taught me something significant: seamless and impactful products aren't just the perfect blend of design, research, product, and operations - they're also measured by the smiles they create, the dreams they enable, and how deeply they integrate into people's lives.
Vikram showed me that users are one of the wisest critics. Muskan revealed how content creates unexpected emotional connections. Jeet demonstrated how communities reignite passions. Rahul proved that virtual spaces can provide real comfort. Jayanti and Poonam showed how platforms become stepping stones to dreams. Renu taught me that staying digitally relevant is about belonging, not just consumption.
What brought these products to life weren't the features we shipped, but the stories of people who smiled, felt actual impact, and made our products integral parts of their lives.
Six years, six stories, one continuous thread of human connection woven through code and pixels.
While I only share 6 stories here from my different timelines, the impact extends far beyond it - it's a teaser to the impact that has been created in the lives of millions across geography, each story building on the wisdom of those who came before.
We're not just building products - we're building possibilities, one story at a time.
