Bakelite ஐ தான் கண்டுபிடித்துள்ளதாக பெல்ஜிய – அமெரிக்க வேதியியலாளர், Leo Baekeland அறிவித்த தினம் இன்று.

பின்னர் டிசம்பர் 1909 ல் ல் இதற்கான காப்புரிமத்தை இவர் பெற்றார்.
பேக்லைட் (Bakelite ) முதன்முதலாக செயற்கைப் பொருட்களிலிருந்து தொகுக்கப்பட்ட பிளாஸ்டிக் ஆகும். பேக்லைட் நன்கு வெப்பம் தாங்கவல்லதும் மற்றும் மின்கடத்தாப்பொருளும் ஆகும். பேக்லைட்டின் இத்தகைய பண்புகள் மின்சார சுவிட்சுகள், சமையல் சாதனங்கள், நகைப்பெட்டிகள், கைப்பிடிகள் போன்றவற்றிற்கு பேக்லைட் அத்தியாவசியப் பொருளாகிறது.
