For centuries, Karthigai Deepam has been lit on the Deepa Thoon (hill-top) here, similar to the famous Deepam on Tiruvannamalai hill, symbolising Murugan’s divine light. Recently, objections were raised citing the presence of a dargah on the same hill, leading to restrictions and controversy over lighting the Deepam. Swaminathan (Madras High Court) strongly observed that Tirupparankundram is historically a Murugan temple hill, and that long-standing religious traditions like Karthigai Deepam cannot be erased or selectively restricted.
