உலகில் முதன்முதலாக 1913 ல் அமெரிக்கா New York World
பத்திரிகையில் Crossword puzzle வெளியான இன்றைய தினம் வாசகர்களால் Cross word puzzle day என கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.
நியூயார்க் வேர்ல்ட் பத்திரிகையின் ஆசிரியர், 8 பக்க கிறிஸ்மஸ் விசேட பதிப்பு நகைச்சுவை பகுதிக்கு ஆர்தர் வெயின் என்னும் பத்திரிகையாளரை ஒரு புதுமையான வார்த்தை விளையாட்டை வடிவமைக்க சொன்னார். அவருக்கு தான் குழந்தையில் விளையாடிய Magic Square விளையாட்டு ஞாபகத்துக்கு வந்தது.
இதனை சாய்சதுர வடிவத்தில் கொஞ்சம் பெரிதாக வடிவமைத்தார். ஒவ்வொரு வார்த்தைக்கும் ஒரு சுலபமான குறிப்பு (clue) தந்தார். அது டிசம்பர் 21, 1913-ல் நியூயார்க் வேர்ல்ட் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை பதிப்பில் வெளிவந்தது.
இதுவே உலகின் முதல் குறுக்கெழுத்துப் புதிர்,
குறுக்கெழுத்துப் புதிர் போட்டி, வேர்ட் க்ரோஸ் (Word Cross) என்ற பெயரில் தோன்றி பின்னர் க்ரோஸ் வேர்ட் (Crossword) என்று மாற்றமடைந்தது.
