Most people think oil is just oil.
It's not. Quality changes everything.
Lighter crude = easier and cheaper to refine → higher yields of premium products (gasoline, jet fuel) → bigger refiner profits.
Heavier crude needs complex processing, more energy, and yields more low-value products.
Quick comparison of major grades (API gravity — higher = lighter/better for simple refining):
USA WTI: ~39–41° API (light, golden, sweet)
Iran Light: ~33–36° API (medium-light)
Russia Urals: ~30–32° API (medium, sour)
Venezuela (Merey blend / Orinoco-based): ~15–16° API (heavy/sour) — unblended extra-heavy can dip to ~8–12° (viscous, tar-like, needs dilution to flow)
The lighter the crude → the cheaper the refining → the bigger the profit margin.
That's why refineries worldwide compete for access to light/sweet barrels, and why sanctions, geopolitics, and trade deals often come down to who gets the good stuff.
Quality drives oil politics more than most realize.
