While India gained independence from British rule in 1947, the state of Goa remained under Portuguese control for another 14 years. Despite diplomatic efforts, the Portuguese refused to leave until the Indian government launched 'Operation Vijay' on December 18, 1961. The joint military operation by the Army, Navy, and Air Force led to the surrender of the Portuguese Governor-General on December 19, 1961. Since then, Goa Liberation Day is celebrated annually on December 19, marking the end of 450 years of colonial rule.
