Over 2 lakh historical documents belonging to Karnataka are currently held in Maharashtra's archives in Pune, Kolhapur, and Mumbai. These records, written in the ancient Modi script, contain vital information about Kittur Rani Chennamma, Sangolli Rayanna, and historical relations between the Mysore Kingdom and Maratha rulers. Despite repeated requests from historians for decades, successive governments have failed to retrieve these documents or their digital copies. The Kannada Development Authority is now planning to train experts in the Modi script to translate and preserve these crumbling records, which are also crucial evidence for the ongoing border dispute in the Supreme Court.
