The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a new rule for its 80 million subscribers. Now, PF contributions exceeding ₹1,800 per month will not be deducted without the employee's consent. While a 12% contribution on a mandatory salary ceiling of ₹15,000 (amounting to ₹1,800) remains compulsory, employees earning higher salaries can opt-out of additional deductions. This change will allow employees to increase their in-hand monthly salary if they choose not to make voluntary extra contributions. Employers will also benefit as they won't be legally required to contribute higher amounts based on an employee's full salary above the statutory limit.
