On National Handloom Day, the plight of Odisha's weavers remains concerning despite the high demand for handloom products. Approximately 1.92 lakh people depend on this sector, yet many struggle to earn even 1,000 rupees daily after 8-10 hours of labor. Issues like the shortage of raw materials (especially Tussar silk), rising costs, low wages, and the influx of fake machine prints are forcing weavers away from their traditional profession. Although several products like Sambalpuri and Khandua have GI tags, weavers and experts demand government intervention, including the establishment of spinning mills, natural dye factories, insurance revival, and a monitoring committee to protect authentic GI products.
