1 in 4 men over 50 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture.
More men will die from a hip fracture than from prostate cancer. Yet nobody is talking about this.
Because osteoporosis has been quietly filed under
"women's disease." And that label is costing men their lives.
Testosterone does for men what estrogen does for women. It protects your bones. Maintains muscle.
Keeps the whole structure standing.
After 40, testosterone drops by 1% every year.
Quietly. Without drama.
And here is what that means for your skeleton.
→ Bone density starts declining before you feel a thing.
→ The spine, hip, and wrist become silently fragile.
→ A fall that would have meant a bruise at 35 means a fracture at 60.
The cruelest part? Men are almost never screened for it.
Women are routinely sent for a DEXA scan after menopause. Men are not. So the fracture is often the first diagnosis. The broken bone is the test result.
And after a hip fracture, 1 in 3 men dies within a year. That number is worse than for women.
Because men tend to be older, sicker, and less prepared when it happens.
This is a silent epidemic with a very loud ending.
So what can you do right now?
1. Ask your doctor for a DEXA scan if you are over
50. Especially if you smoke, drink regularly, or have been on steroids. Most men have never had one.
2. Start progressive resistance training. Bones are living tissue. They respond to load. When you lift, your bones remodel and strengthen. Walks are good. Lifting is non-negotiable.
3. Eat more protein. After 50, your body becomes less efficient at using the protein you eat. You need more to maintain the same muscle. And muscle is what protects the bone when you fall.
4. Check your Vitamin D. As the Vitamin D post in this series shows, most urban Indians are deficient.
And Vitamin D is the key that allows calcium to actually enter the bone.
5. Reduce alcohol. Even moderate regular drinking reduces bone density over time. This one is underreported.
The most dangerous thing about osteoporosis in men is not the disease.
It is the belief that it is someone else's problem!
