This is just an outburst of the pathetic conditions which we are forced to put up with, when buying liquor. It is the sheer misfortune of customers buying liquor in Tamil Nadu who have to put up with a sub-standard pathetic experience such as this. The term ‘Elite’ is not as elite as it sounds! Entered into a place which was like a furnace, a dungeon would be more ventilated than this place, no AC, the fans hardly helping, none of the refrigerators working, most popular domestic brands of beer not available, whatever was left in the refrigerator was at room temperature. The rusty refrigerators looked like it had been ages since they actually worked. Picked 3 Kingfisher Ultra Max Beers and proceeded to stand in the queue, now drenched from head to toe due to sweat and heat. Now to something that surprised me!!!! It is no secret that in spite of all the public outburst, NO ONE has been able to do ANYTHING about the extra 10 rupees that these people collect per bottle over and above MRP, but collecting it via a separate UPI QR code into a personal account of an individual was very surprising! A bottle was priced at 210, and three bottles 630. They wanted 10 Rupees ‘extra’ per bottle, that’s 30 Rupees into a separate account of a person, and the remaining 630 into the account of Tasmac Shop No 715. In a span of a few minutes, there were over a couple of Hundred rupees transferred into that personal account. Just imagining how much ‘free’ money would they make in a month. While the government has made up their mind that liquor lovers aka ‘Madhupriyargal’ deserve only this much, the ‘elite’ stores were essentially meant to safeguard whatever little self-respect was left in the TN people to ensure a slightly more decent liquor-buying experience as compared to the ‘regular’ shops where you needed that ‘extra local talent’ to get your hand through the prison-like iron grill and manage to grab your stuff without being abused by the shopkeeper or fellow-madhupriyargal. Perhaps the only option left now is to pick up something from a shopping mall, of course by paying the ‘extra’ TEN rupees per bottle there too! Just rewind 3 decades, in the Nineties, private wine shops used to treat customers like Kings! Chilled beer used to be the norm, places were clean and well maintained. Somewhere there was definitely an intent to respect the customer. With time, so much has changed about liquor stores in Bengaluru, Hyderabad that you hardly feel you’re in India. An experience unmatched, international varieties, unparalleled shopping experience, while we're still stuck with this pathetic state of affairs!
