Parashurama asked Ganesha who was guarding the door where Shiva was resting. Ganesha denied in order not to disturbed Shiva. Parashurama became angry and struck Ganesha with his axe, his parashu. Ganesha recognizing the axe as a gift to Parashurama by Shiva, received the blow on his tusk, which broke.
