The Punjab Government, under the leadership of Forest and Wildlife Protection Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, has recommended 7 proposals for de-silting in the Beas and Ravi rivers to mitigate flood risks and protect wildlife habitats. Following a study by IIT Ropar, the State Wildlife Board approved 6 sites in Beas (Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur) and 1 in Ravi near Kathlore-Kushalian sanctuary. The move aims to restore natural river flow and benefit species like dolphins and gharials by increasing water depth. The proposals are now sent to the National Board for Wildlife for final approval.
