Bg. 2.18 (ISKCON) In the Vedānta-sūtras the living entity is qualified as light because he is part and parcel of the supreme light. As sunlight maintains the entire universe, so the light of the soul maintains this material body. As soon as the spirit soul is out of this material body, the body begins to decompose; therefore it is the spirit soul which maintains this body. The body itself is unimportant. अन्तवन्त इमे देहा नित्यस्योक्ताः शरीरिणः । अनाशिनोऽप्रमेयस्य तस्माद्युध्यस्व भारत ॥ १८ ॥ antavanta ime dehā nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ anāśino ’prameyasya tasmād yudhyasva bhārata Synonyms anta-vantaḥ — perishable; ime — all these; dehāḥ — material bodies; nityasya — eternal in existence; uktāḥ — are said; śarīriṇaḥ — of the embodied soul; anāśinaḥ — never to be destroyed; aprameyasya — immeasurable; tasmāt — therefore; yudhyasva — fight; bhārata — O descendant of Bharata. Translation The material body of the indestructible, immeasurable and eternal living entity is sure to come to an end; therefore, fight, O descendant of Bharata. Purport The material body is perishable by nature. It may perish immediately, or it may do so after a hundred years. It is a question of time only. There is no chance of maintaining it indefinitely. But the spirit soul is so minute that it cannot even be seen by an enemy, to say nothing of being killed. As mentioned in the previous verse, it is so small that no one can have any idea how to measure its dimension. So from both viewpoints there is no cause of lamentation, because the living entity (We) as he is cannot be killed nor can the material body be saved for any length of time or permanently protected. The minute particle of the whole spirit acquires this material body according to his work, and therefore observance of religious principles should be utilized. OM TAT SAT ഭഗവത്ജ്യോതിസ്സുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ സൂര്യചന്ദ്രാദികളുടെ ആവശ്യമില്ലെന്ന് വേദസാഹിത്യങ്ങളിൽ കാണാം. ഭൗതികപ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ ഭഗവാന്റെ ആത്മീയതേജസ്സ് - ബ്രഹ്മജ്യോതിഃ - മഹത്തത്ത്വമെന്ന ഭൗതികപദാർത്ഥങ്ങളാൽ മൂടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് പ്രകാശത്തിന് സൂര്യൻ, ചന്ദ്രൻ, വൈദ്യുതി എന്നിവയുടെ സഹായം നമുക്കാവശ്യമായി വരുന്നത്. ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികലോകത്തിന് ഇവയൊന്നും ആവശ്യമില്ല. അവിടുത്തെ പ്രഭാപൂരംകൊണ്ട് സർവ്വവും പ്രകാശമാനമാകുന്നുവെന്ന് വൈദികസാഹിത്യം ഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഭഗവാന്റെ സ്ഥിതി ഈ ഭൗതികലോകത്തിലല്ലെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാകുന്നു. അതിദൂരെയുള്ള പര വ്യോമത്തിലാണ് ഭഗവദ്ധാമമെന്നതും വേദങ്ങൾ സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുന്നു. ജ്യോതിഷാമപി തജ്ജ്യോതിസ്‌തമസഃ പരമുച്യതേ ജ്ഞാനം ജ്ഞേയം ജ്ഞാനഗമ്യം ഹൃദി സർവസ്യ വിഷ്‍ഠിതം. സർവസ്യ - സർവ്വഭൂതങ്ങളുടേയും; ഹൃദി - ഹ്യദയത്തിൽ; വിഷ്ഠിതം - അധിഷ്ഠിതമായി; ജ്ഞാനം - ജ്ഞാനമായി; ജ്ഞേയം - അറിയേണ്ടതായി; ജ്ഞാനഗമ്യം - ജ്ഞാനംകൊണ്ട് പ്രാപിക്കേണ്ടതായ; തത് – അത്; തമസഃ പരം - തമസ്സിന് (സകലവിധമായ അന്ധകാരത്തിനും) അതീതമായതും; ജ്യോതിഷാം അപി ജ്യോതിഃ - എല്ലാ പ്രകാശകിരണങ്ങളുടേയും ഉദ്ഭവസ്ഥാനമാണ്. അദ്ദേഹമാണ് സർവ്വജ്യോതിസ്സുകളുടേയും സ്രോതസ്സ്. പദാർത്ഥനിഷ്ഠമായ തമസ്സിനെ അതിക്രമിച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്നതും അവ്യക്തമായിട്ടുള്ളതും അവിടുന്നുതന്നെ. അറിവും അറിയേണ്ടുന്നതും അറിവിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യവും സർവ്വഹൃദയങ്ങളിലും കുടികൊള്ളുന്നതും ആ പരമ പുരുഷനാണ്. പരമാത്മാവായ ഭഗവാനാണ് സൂര്യചന്ദ്രനക്ഷത്രാദി സകല ജ്യോതിസ്സുകളുടേയും പ്രകാശത്തിനടിസ്ഥാനം. ഭഗവത്ജ്യോതിസ്സുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികസാമ്രാജ്യത്തിൽ സൂര്യചന്ദ്രാദികളുടെ ആവശ്യമില്ലെന്ന് വേദസാഹിത്യങ്ങളിൽ കാണാം. ഭൗതികപ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ ഭഗവാന്റെ ആത്മീയതേജസ്സ് - ബ്രഹ്മജ്യോതിഃ - മഹത്തത്ത്വമെന്ന ഭൗതികപദാർത്ഥങ്ങളാൽ മൂടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് പ്രകാശത്തിന് സൂര്യൻ, ചന്ദ്രൻ, വൈദ്യുതി എന്നിവയുടെ സഹായം നമുക്കാവശ്യമായി വരുന്നത്. ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികലോകത്തിന് ഇവയൊന്നും ആവശ്യമില്ല. അവിടുത്തെ പ്രഭാപൂരംകൊണ്ട് സർവ്വവും പ്രകാശമാനമാകുന്നുവെന്ന് വൈദികസാഹിത്യം ഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഭഗവാന്റെ സ്ഥിതി ഈ ഭൗതികലോകത്തിലല്ലെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാകുന്നു. അതിദൂരെയുള്ള പര വ്യോമത്തിലാണ് ഭഗവദ്ധാമമെന്നതും വേദങ്ങൾ സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുന്നു. ‘ആദിത്യവർണം, തമസഃ പരസ്താത്’. എന്നിങ്ങനെ ശ്വേതാശ്വതരോപനിഷത്ത് (3.8) വർണ്ണിക്കുന്നു. ആദിത്യനെപ്പോലെ ശാശ്വത തേജസ്വിയാണ് ഭഗവാൻ, ഈ ഭൗതിക പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ തമസ്സിൽ നിന്ന് വളരെയകലെയാണദ്ദേഹം. തന്റെ ജ്ഞാനവും ഇന്ദ്രിയാതീതം തന്നെ. ആത്മീയ ജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ സാരസത്തയാണ് ബ്രഹ്മമെന്ന് വേദോക്തിയുണ്ട്. ആദ്ധ്യാത്മിക ലോകങ്ങളിലെത്താൻ ആകാംക്ഷയുള്ളവർക്ക് സർവ്വഹൃദയങ്ങളിലും വാഴുന്ന പരമാത്മാവ് ജ്ഞാനം നൽകും. ശ്വേതാശ്വതരോപനിഷത്തിലെ ഒരു വേദമന്ത്രം (6.18) ഇതാണ്. ‘താം ഹ ദേവം ആത്മ ബുദ്ധി പ്രകാശം മുമുക്ഷർവൈശരണമഹം പ്രപദ്യേ’. മോക്ഷത്തിലിച്ഛയുള്ളവർ സ്വയം ഭഗവാന് സമർപ്പിതരാവുക തന്നെ വേണം. ഭൗതിക ജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യത്തെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളമാണെങ്കിൽ അതും വൈദികസാഹിത്യം സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുന്നു. ‘തമേവ വിദിത്വാദി മൃത്യുമേതി’, അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അറിയുന്നതുകൊണ്ടേ ജനന മരണങ്ങൾക്കപ്പുറം കടക്കാൻ കഴിയു.
