In the State Budget 2026โ€“27, Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal announced that Arts and Science degree courses in government and aided colleges will now be free, extending free education beyond Class 12 for the first time. The budget also brings accident insurance for students from Classes 1 to 12, higher funding for universities, scholarships and fellowships including PhD support, with an allocation of โ‚น38.76 crore. A new โ€œGlobal Schoolโ€ focusing on modern technology, vocational education and future skills has also been proposed, along with stronger links between research institutions and local bodies. To remove accommodation hurdles, a public hostel will be launched, while โ‚น259.09 crore has been allocated to strengthen university activities. With a strong focus on education, welfare and social security, is Kerala setting a new benchmark for higher education in India?
