The Odisha government has drafted the 'Odisha Urban Rent Control Act-2026' to replace the outdated 59-year-old rent law. Under the new rules, oral rental agreements will no longer be valid; instead, written agreements must be digitally registered within 60 days with the Rent Authority and local police. A special portal will be launched for this purpose. While rent amounts will be mutually decided by owners and tenants without government interference, the law aims to prevent illegal evictions and protect the rights of both parties.
