The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is reconsidering the introduction of polymer or plastic currency notes to reduce printing costs and enhance durability. Recent board meetings in Patna and Mumbai highlighted the high costs of printing paper currency, which reached ₹6,372 crore in FY 2024-25. Plastic notes are resistant to moisture and dirt, offering a longer lifespan. While India previously tested polymer notes in 2012, the initiative remained in the pilot phase. Currently, over 60 countries, including Australia, Canada, and the UK, utilize plastic banknotes.
