The egg-laying process of saltwater crocodiles in the Mahakalapada block of Kendrapara is set to begin in two weeks. Male crocodiles are currently scouting for safe nesting sites near riverbanks and collecting materials like grass and twigs. Female crocodiles lay 60-70 eggs, which are guarded by the males for about 45 days until they hatch. The Forest Department has initiated steps to identify and protect these nesting sites.
