The Kantighai Escape on the Baitarani River in Bhadrak district has been a source of sorrow for locals for five decades. Despite repeated repairs and concreting in 2011, the low height of the escape (only 2 feet) causes floodwaters to submerge 31 panchayats across Bhandaripokhari, Dhamnagar, and Tihidi blocks every year. Although plans for strengthening the embankment were proposed by the previous government, work remains incomplete. Locals are demanding an increase in the height of the Kantighai Escape and the construction of the Kholanala embankment to protect the region.
