Farmers in Nabarangpur, Odisha are forced to dry their paddy and maize crops on public roads and highways due to a lack of proper threshing floors (khala). Recent unseasonal Kalbaishakhi rains have drenched the harvested crops, raising concerns about moisture levels and price deductions during sale. Although government schemes allocated funds for community threshing floors, many were built in remote or inappropriate locations like near graveyards, making them unusable. This practice of drying crops on roads is also increasing the risk of road accidents at night.
