On 29 March 2026, Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, officially announced candidates for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and gave an MLA ticket to Sabarinathan, the son of his former driver Rajendran.
Later the same candidate R. Sabarinathan (son of his former driver Rajendran) contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly election from the Virugambakkam constituency in Chennai, and he won the seat, securing around 76,092 votes and defeating DMK candidate A.M.V. Prabhakar Raja by a margin of about 27,000 votes, marking a high profile and widely discussed victory that validated Vijay’s unconventional decision to give him the ticket.
