பெருமாளின் திருமுடியில் கூந்தல் வளர்ந்த அற்புதம்!
அன்பர்களுக்கு வணக்கம். 🙏
நாகை மண்ணில் காவிரி பாயும் நன்னிலம் வட்டத்தில், "கீழேழு திவ்ய தேசங்களில்" முதன்மையான தலமாக விளங்குவது தான் "திருக்கண்ணபுரம்".
பெருமாள் மனித ரூபத்தில் வந்து அற்புதம் செய்த உன்னதமான தலம் இது. இங்கு வீற்றிருக்கும் "ஸ்ரீ சௌரிராஜப் பெருமாள்" (நீலமேகப் பெருமாள்) ஆலயத்தின் நெஞ்சை உருக வைக்கும் வரலாற்றையும், ஆன்மீக ரகசியங்களையும் இந்தப் பதிவில் காண்போம். 👇
இக்கோயிலின் மூலவருக்கு 'சௌரிராஜன்' என்று பெயர் வரக் காரணமான ஒரு சுவாரசியமான வரலாற்றுச் சம்பவம் உண்டு.
முற்காலத்தில் இக்கோயிலில் ரங்கபட்டார் என்ற தீவிர பக்தி கொண்ட அர்ச்சகர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். ஒருநாள், அந்த ஊரை ஆண்ட சோழ மன்னன் பெருமாளைத் தரிசிக்க ஆலயத்திற்கு வருவதாக இருந்தது.
அன்றைய தினம் பெருமாளுக்குச் சாத்தப்பட்ட மாலையை, ஒரு தாசி பக்தை ஒருத்திக்கு அர்ச்சகர் பிரசாதமாகத் தந்துவிட்டார். ஆனால், திடீரென மன்னன் ஆலயத்திற்குள் நுழைந்துவிட்டான்.
பதறிப்போன அர்ச்சகர், வேறு மாலை இல்லாததால் அந்தத் தாசியிடமிருந்து மாலையைத் திரும்பப் பெற்று, மன்னனுக்குக் கொடுப்பதற்காகப் பெருமாளுக்குச் சாத்தினார்.
மாலையை வாங்கிய மன்னன், அதில் ஒரு நீண்ட "தலைமுடி" இருப்பதைக் கண்டு கோபமடைந்து, "பெருமாள் மாலையில் தலைமுடி எப்படி வந்தது?" என்று அர்ச்சகரைக் கடிந்து கேட்டான்.
பயந்துபோன அர்ச்சகர், தவற்றைக் மறைக்க, "அரசே! அது நம் பெருமாளின் தலைமுடி தான். அவருக்குத் தலையில் நிஜமாகவே கூந்தல் உண்டு" என்று கூறிவிட்டார். இதைக் கேட்டு ஆச்சரியமும் கோபமும் அடைந்த மன்னன், "நாளை காலை நான் வந்து பார்க்கிறேன். பெருமாளுக்குக் கூந்தல் இல்லையெனில் உனக்கு மரண தண்டனை" என்று கூறிச் சென்றான்.
அன்று இரவு அர்ச்சகர் ரங்கபட்டார், பெருமாளின் திருவடிகளில் விழுந்து, "தாயே, தந்தையே! என் மானத்தைக் காக்க உன்னைத் தவிர யாருமில்லை" என்று அழுது உருகித் தவம் இருந்தார்.
அடுத்த நாள் காலை மன்னன் ஆலயத்திற்கு வந்து, பெருமாளின் கிரீடத்தைக் கழற்றச் சொன்னான். என்ன ஆச்சரியம்! அங்கே பெருமாளின் திருமுடியில் நிஜமான, பளபளக்கும் சுருள் கூந்தல் (சௌரி) வளர்ந்திருந்தது!
இதைப் பார்த்த மன்னன், "இது அர்ச்சகர் செய்த ஏமாற்று வேலை, பொய்யாகக் கூந்தலை ஒட்டியிருக்கிறார்" என்று நினைத்து, பெருமாளின் கூந்தலில் இருந்து ஒரு முடியைப் பறித்தான்.
அப்போது அந்த முடியின் வேரிலிருந்து உண்மையான இரத்தம் கசிந்தது! பெருமாள் தன் பக்தனைக் காக்கச் செய்த இந்த லீலையைக் கண்டு மன்னன் நடுங்கி, பெருமாளின் காலில் விழுந்து மன்னிப்புக் கேட்டான்.
சௌரி என்றால் கூந்தல் என்று பொருள். தன் தலையில் சௌரியைக் காட்டி அற்புதம் செய்ததால், அன்றிலிருந்து இவருக்கு "சௌரிராஜப் பெருமாள்" என்ற திருநாமம் நிலைபெற்றது! இன்றும் பிரம்மோற்சவத்தின் ஒரு நாள், பெருமாள் கூந்தல் அலங்காரத்துடன் காட்சி தருவது வழக்கம்.
இத்தலத்தின் மற்றொரு சிறப்பம்சம், இரவில் பெருமாளுக்குப் படைக்கப்படும் நெய் வழியும் "முனையதரையன் பொங்கல்" ஆகும்.
முனையதரையன் என்ற பெருமாள் பக்தர், அரசாங்கத்திற்குச் செலுத்த வேண்டிய வரியைச் செலுத்தாமல், அந்தப் பணத்தில் பெருமாளுக்குத் தினந்தோறும் பொங்கல் நைவேத்தியம் செய்து வந்தார்.
இதனால் கோபமடைந்த மன்னன் அவரைச் சிறையில் அடைத்தான். ஆனால், அன்றிரவு மன்னனின் கனவில் தோன்றிய பெருமாள், "முனையதரையனை விடுதலை செய். அவர் எனக்குப் படைக்கும் பொங்கலின் சுவையே தனி" என்று கூறினார்.
மன்னன் அவரைத் திகைப்புடன் விடுதலை செய்தான். அன்று முதல் இன்று வரை, இக்கோயிலில் இரவில் படைக்கப்படும் "முனையதரையன் பொங்கல்" பிரசாதம் உலகப் பிரசித்தி பெற்றது.
சௌரிராஜ பெருமாளின் பேரருள்:
திருமங்கையாழ்வாரால் நூறு பாசுரங்களால் (பெரிய திருமொழியில்) மங்களாசாசனம் செய்யப்பட்ட தலம் இது.
திருமணத் தடைகள் நீங்கவும், அரச தண்டனைகள் அல்லது வழக்குச் சிக்கல்களில் இருந்து விடுபடவும், திருக்கண்ணபுரம் சௌரிராஜப் பெருமாளை மனமுருகி வேண்டினால், ஆபத்துக் காலத்தில் நம் மானத்தையும், வாழ்வையும் அவரே முன்னின்று காப்பார் என்பது பக்தர்களின் அசைக்க முடியாத நம்பிக்கை.
"பக்தனின் மானம் காக்கத் தன் திருமுடியில் கூந்தல் வளர்த்தவனே... முனையதரையன் பொங்கலை ஆவலோடு உண்டவனே... திருக்கண்ணபுரம் மண்ணைக் காக்கும் சௌரிராஜப் பெருமாளே... உன் பாதம் சரணம்!"

Thirukannapuram Sri Sowriraja Perumal
The Miracle of Hair Growing on Perumal's Head!
Greetings to all devotees. 🙏
Situated in the Nannilam taluk of the Nagapattinam region—where the sacred River Cauvery flows—"Thirukannapuram" stands as the foremost among the "Seven Lower Divya Desams" (sacred Vaishnavite shrines).
This is an exalted shrine where Lord Perumal manifested in human form to perform miracles. In this post, we shall explore the heart-melting history and spiritual mysteries surrounding the temple of "Sri Sowriraja Perumal" (also known as Neelamegha Perumal), who is enshrined here. 👇
There is a fascinating historical incident that explains how the presiding deity (Moolavar) of this temple came to be named 'Sowrirajan'.
In ancient times, there lived in this temple an archaka (priest) named Rangabhattar, who was a devotee of intense piety. One day, the Chola King who ruled the region was scheduled to visit the temple to have *darshan* (sacred sight) of Lord Perumal.
On that very day, the priest gave the garland that had been adorned upon Perumal as prasadam (sacred offering) to a female devotee—a Devadasi—who was a devout worshipper. However, the King suddenly entered the temple premises.
Panic-stricken—and having no other garland available—the priest retrieved the garland from the Devadasi and placed it back upon Perumal to present it to the King.
Upon receiving the garland, the King noticed a long strand of "hair" within it; enraged, he sternly rebuked the priest, demanding, "How did a strand of hair find its way into Perumal's garland?"
Terrified, and attempting to conceal his error, the priest replied, "Your Majesty! That is indeed our Perumal's own hair. He truly possesses hair upon His head." Astonished yet furious at this claim, the King declared, "I shall return tomorrow morning to verify this myself. If Perumal does not, in fact, have hair, you shall face the death penalty," and departed. That night, the priest Rangabhattar fell at the sacred feet of Lord Perumal and, weeping with deep devotion, prayed fervently: "Oh Mother! Oh Father! There is no one but You to protect my honor!"
The very next morning, the King arrived at the temple and ordered that Perumal's crown be removed. What a marvel! There, upon Perumal's divine head, real, lustrous curly hair (known as Chouri) had actually grown!
Upon seeing this, the King suspected foul play, thinking, "This is a deceitful trick orchestrated by the priest; he has merely pasted artificial hair onto the idol." Acting on this suspicion, he plucked a single strand of hair from Perumal's head.
At that very instant, real blood began to ooze from the root of that hair! Witnessing this divine miracle—performed by Perumal solely to protect His devotee—the King trembled in awe; he fell at Perumal's feet and begged for forgiveness.
The word Chouri means "hair." Since Perumal performed this miracle by manifesting hair upon His head, the sacred name "Chourirajapperumal" became permanently established for Him from that day forward. To this day, during the annual Brahmotsavam festival, it remains a cherished tradition for Perumal to appear before devotees adorned with this special hair ornamentation.
Another unique feature of this sacred site is the "Munaiyatharaiyan Pongal"—a rich, ghee-laden offering presented to Perumal every night.
Munaiyatharaiyan, a devout devotee of Perumal, had failed to pay the taxes due to the government; instead, he utilized those funds to prepare and offer Pongal as a daily Neivedyam (sacred food offering) to Perumal.
Enraged by this act, the King had him imprisoned. However, that very night, Perumal appeared in the King's dream and commanded, "Release Munaiyatharaiyan immediately. The Pongal he offers to Me possesses a flavor that is truly unique and incomparable."
Astonished by this divine command, the King promptly released him. From that day to this, the "Munaiyatharaiyan Pongal" Prasadam—offered nightly at this temple—has gained worldwide renown. The Abundant Grace of Sowriraja Perumal:
This is a sacred shrine that was glorified through a Mangalasasanam (hymn of praise) comprising one hundred verses by Thirumangai Azhwar in his work, Periya Thirumozhi.
It is the unshakable belief of devotees that if one prays with a melting heart to Sowriraja Perumal of Thirukannapuram—whether to resolve obstacles to marriage or to find deliverance from state penalties or legal entanglements—He Himself will step forward to personally safeguard one's honor and life during times of peril.
"Oh, You who grew locks of hair upon Your sacred crown to protect the honor of Your devotee... Oh, You who partook with eagerness of the Pongal offered by Munaiyadarayan... Oh, Sowriraja Perumal, Guardian of the sacred soil of Thirukannapuram... I surrender at Your holy feet!"
