The Weave and the Wealth
*****
Disclaimer - I am not a finfluencer, nor am I telling anyone where to invest. This is just a story about what I discovered about myself as a side effect of investment.
****
I have a confession. I started seriously investing my money into mutual funds only some six months ago. My husband spoke the language of markets fluently and constantly, investing judiciously for our family goals. Meanwhile, my own discretionary funds languished in bank fixed deposits. Patient, unglamorous, renewing themselves every year like a ritual nobody questions anymore, and earning a pittance.
I mostly spent my money on every trip worth taking and every saree worth owning. I do not regret this. A woman who has stood in front of a thousand year old temple, or run her hand along a length of handwoven silk still warm from the loom, has spent her money on something real, something worth preserving. But real is not the same as wise, and I did not know yet that the two could coexist.
One day, I read a book on investments. Somewhere in its dry, sensible pages was one line that would not leave me alone afterward. ‘Income is what you earn in return for your time and your talent. Wealth is what your income earns for you once you invest it’. For some reason, that line struck home.
I began putting money into mutual funds, the way you plant something in a corner of the garden you are not sure gets enough sun. And then I did what I imagine every first time investor does. I watched. Not anxiously, but the way you glance at a sapling each morning without quite admitting that is what you are doing.
The process of watching my investments did something else that I didn’t quite expect. It taught me impulse control. There is a saree I still think about, one of a kind, forty percent off at a year end sale, the kind of discount that whispers to you that this will never happen again, that this is fate wearing a price tag. Earlier, I would have bought it before the thought had finished forming.
Now? I still put it in the cart. But I pause at the amount payable, and say to that number, you could be this saree, which will give me a wonderful evening and then hang in a cupboard. Or you could be a unit in a fund, small and unremarkable today, but on the way to become something I cannot yet picture.
A saree blooms once and beautifully. A good investment grows slowly and without applause, the way wealth always does, unnoticed until the day you look and it has become a harvest.
I am both, the woman who wants that exquisite weave today, and the woman who has learned, a little late but not too late, to let some things wait and multiply instead. Some days, I choose the weave. Most days, I choose wealth. But I no longer confuse the two, and that, more than any return my fund has given me, is what investing has actually taught me.
When I started investing, I did not set out to learn impulse control. I only meant to grow my income into wealth. In the end, it turned out to be the same lesson!
