According to the UDISE+ report, Odisha's primary education system is facing a severe shortage of teachers. Around 1,458 schools in the state are running with only a single teacher, affecting approximately 60,000 students. Koraput district is worst hit with 119 such schools. This trend has seen a 34% increase in the 2025-26 academic year. Protests have erupted in districts like Subarnapur and Ganjam where parents and students are demanding the filling of vacant posts. Nationally, over 1 lakh schools operate with a single teacher, with Andhra Pradesh topping the list.
