Farmers in Odisha's Subarnapur and Bargarh districts are facing severe distress as thousands of bags of Rabi paddy remain unsold under the open sky due to administrative mismanagement. Recent pre-monsoon rains have caused the paddy to soak and sprout, leading to fears of weight cuts and financial loss. Despite the mandi opening last month, a lack of millers has stalled the procurement process. Farmers have resorted to road blockades in protest. While the Food and Supplies Minister assured that 6 lakh metric tonnes have already been collected and issues are being resolved, the ground reality remains dire for many.
