On 23 May 2026, Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh created history at the National Senior Federation Athletics Championships at Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi by becoming the fastest Indian ever in the men’s 100 metres, clocking a national record time of 10.09 seconds and becoming the first Indian athlete to run the event in under 10.10 seconds.
The 25 year old Punjab born athlete, who represents Reliance Foundation and is also associated with the Indian Navy, had already broken the national record a day earlier with 10.17 seconds before rival sprinter Animesh Kujur briefly surpassed it with 10.15 seconds, after which Gurindervir reclaimed the record in the final.
His journey began in Patial village near Jalandhar, where his father Kamaljit Singh, a Punjab Police constable and former athlete, trained him on local village grounds before he joined coach Swaran Singh in Dalla village.
Gurindervir overcame financial struggles, injuries and limited facilities during his rise in Indian athletics, improving from a personal best of 10.27 seconds in 2021 to 10.20 in 2025 and now 10.09 in 2026, while also qualifying for upcoming Commonwealth and Asian Games events.
