#Social_Issues 😡 The Rising Cost of Mobile Connectivity
In 2014, a ₹10 recharge could keep an ordinary Indian connected. Today, ₹349 has become a common entry point for mobile services.
Now look at this from the perspective of the bottom 90% of Indians.
According to World Inequality Lab estimates, the bottom 50% earns an average of about ₹5,930 per month, while the middle 40% averages around ₹13,773 per month.
For these households, ₹349 is a significant expense, especially when mobile connectivity has become essential for employment, education, banking, government services, business and communication.
And this is not an isolated price increase. Airtel raised its entry-level recharge from ₹99 to ₹155 in 2023. In July 2024, Jio, Airtel and Vi raised tariffs again, with increases of roughly 12–27% across various plans.
😡 The bigger concern is competition.
Jio and Airtel together account for around 76% of India's telecom subscribers, while BSNL has only around 8%. A government-owned BSNL that lacks the scale and competitiveness to seriously challenge these two giants leaves consumers with limited practical alternatives.
This combination of rising prices, concentrated market power, weak competition and low incomes creates an economic environment where the benefits increasingly flow towards those with greater purchasing power.
In simple terms, it can help the poor become poorer and the rich become richer—widening the very income and wealth gap that India should be trying to reduce.
This is where the BJP-led government and the Finance Ministry need to look beyond headline GDP growth and focus on the everyday purchasing power of ordinary Indians.
For a family living on ₹5,930 a month, every recurring increase in essential expenses matters.
This is exactly where BJP risks losing touch with the people—and why its support base and vote share can keep shrinking.
A digitally connected India cannot become a financially disconnected India.
